Do You Know How Much Temperature Can the Optical Fiber Withstand?

Is the fiber optical cable afraid of high temperature? Different types of optical fiber cables have an upper limit. The working temperature of standard optical fiber network cable is -40ºC ~ +75ºC.

If it is an optical fiber cable used in industry, each fiber cable has a different composition, the high temperature and low temperature it can withstand are different, so you need to consult the manufacturer for details.

The Optical fiber temperature regulation

The upper and lower limits of the working environment temperature of the optical fiber cable temperature measurement system are usually -20℃~+55℃.

Generally, the conventional high temperature resistant optical fiber is -20°~+300° for long-term, and for short-term can reach 350°

The working environment temperature of the distributed optical fiber temperature measurement system is -10℃~50℃, and the temperature measurement range is conventional temperature: -40—120℃; high temperature optical cable: -40—400℃

The measuring temperature range of optical fiber grating temperature sensor is -40℃~300℃

How Optical fiber cable is affected by temperature?

1. The temperature characteristic of optical fiber refers to the influence on optical fiber loss under high and low temperature conditions. The loss of optical fiber increases under low temperature conditions. This is due to the different expansion coefficients of optical fiber coating layer, overmolding layer and quartz. The thermal expansion coefficient of organic resin and plastic is much larger than that of quartz. It shrinks at low temperature and elongates at high temperature. Under the action of this kind of axial compressive force, microbending will increase the loss. If working at low temperature, as the temperature continues to decrease, the fiber loss will continue to increase. When the temperature drops to about -55°C, the loss increases sharply, making the system unable to operate normally.

2. The microbending loss of the optical fiber due to temperature changes is caused by thermal expansion and contraction. It is known in physics that the thermal expansion coefficient of the silicon dioxide (SiO2) that constitutes the optical fiber is very small, and it hardly shrinks when the temperature drops. The optical fiber must be coated and added with some other components during the process of forming a cable. The expansion coefficient of the coating material and other components is relatively large. When the temperature decreases, the shrinkage is more serious, so when the temperature changes, the expansion coefficient of the material is different. , Will make the optical fiber bend slightly, especially in the low temperature area.
