The 25G Ethernet technology adopted by 25G optical transceiver is a new Ethernet standard with multiple advantages. It was proposed by the IEEE802.3 working group in July 2014 and was fully revised in June 2016. 25G Ethernet technology can maximize the bandwidth and port density of the data center, and can achieve 100Gb data transmission through the single-channel physical layer technology of 25Gb/s.

SFP28 25G optical transceivers are generally used with single-mode patch cord OS2 to be widely used in data center 25G Ethernet and 5G fronthaul CPRI/eCPRI networks, and the maximum transmission distance can reach 10KM.

The Cisco SFP-25G-LR-S Compatible SFP28-SM-25G-31-10K is a single-Channel, Pluggable, Fiber-Optic SFP28 for 25 Gigabit Ethernet and Infiniband EDR Applications. SFP transceiver is a high performance module for short-range data communication and interconnect applications which operate at 25.78125 Gbps up to 10km using OS2 fiber. This optical module is designed to operate over singlemode fiber systems using a nominal wavelength of 1310nm.

What are the types of 25G optical modules?

25G optical modules are roughly divided into three types, 25G dual-fiber modules, 25G WDM modules, and 25G BIDI modules.

Is there any damage to the module if it is used for transmission over a short distance of 10m for an 25G optical module of 10km? Do I need to use attenuator?

We need to ensure that the receiving power of the module is not more than the receiver overload power to avoid the module being broken. So to get the 25G LR to work at 10m, you need to add about 3dB attenuation.

At present, 25G SFP28 optical modules can transmit up to 40 kilometers. There are 25G SFP28 ER, 25G SFP28 bidi, 25G SFP28 CWDM, and 25G SFP28 DWDM.
