The Cisco-compatible SFP transceiver provides up to 10km of 1000Base-BX throughput over single-mode fiber (SMF) using 1490nm-TX/1310nm-RX wavelengths via LC simplex connectors. This bi-directional unit must be used with another transceiver or network equipment of complementary wavelengths. It provides 1000BASE Ethernet connectivity options for Fast Ethernet, Telecom and Data Centers.

By wavelength distinction, SFP optical modules are 850nm/1310nm/1550nm/1490nm, 850nm is SFP multi-mode, the transmission distance is less than 2KM, the wavelength is 1310/1550nm is single-mode, and the transmission distance is more than 10KM.
SFP is more space saving than GBIC since the former has only half the size of the latter. SFP has transmission rate ranging from 100Mbps to 200Gbps and it can work at distances ranging between 500 meters to hundreds of kilometers. The 'hot-pluggable' feature of SFP makes it flexible.
SFP transceiver modules are mainly classified based on their speed capabilities. Some of the types are 100Base, 1000Base Gigabit, and 10Gig (SFP+). For most Fiber SFP modules, the transmission speed is 1 Gigabit, but the newer versions such as SFP+ have a higher speed of transmission, from 10 to 100 Gigabit.
