The difference Types of MPO/MTP Fiber Patch Cord

As the demand for data centers continues to increase, traditional optical fiber not only reduces the space utilization of the data center, but also increases the management difficulty of the cabling system, while MPO/MTP fiber patch cord greatly improve the space utilization of the data center, so now MPO/MTP fiber optic patch cord are widely used. And MPO/MTP fiber patch cord have 3 difference types, there are trunk MPO/MTP fiber patch cord, breakout MPO/MTP fiber patch cord and Fan-out MPO/MTP fiber patch cord, the main difference is its structure, use and applicable scenarios. Let’s take a closer look at the three different types of MPO MTP fiber optic patch cord.

Trunk MPO/MTP Fiber Patch Cord

Trunk MPO/MTP fiber patch cord also known as harness cables, is pre-terminated assemblies. The MPO/MTP connector commonly accepts 12, 16, 24, 48 fiber strands and connects in a similar way to legacy SC-style fiber connectors.

Trunk MPO/MTP Fiber Patch Cord is often used for structured cabling in high-density environments, allowing for rapid deployment of backbone cabling. They can be used for direct connections between optical modules, such as 40GBASE-SR4/PLR4, 100GBASE-SR4/SR10, 200GBASE-SR8, and 400GBASE-SR8

Breakout MPO/MTP Fiber Patch Cord

The breakout MPO/MTP fiber patch cord typically has an MPO/MTP connector on one end and multiple individual fiber connectors, such as LC or SC, on the other end. The MPO/MTP connector is used to connect to the high-speed transceiver, while the individual fiber connectors are used to connect to the lower-speed transceivers.

These MPO/MTP fiber optic patch cords are commonly used to connect one high-speed optical transceiver to multiple lower-speed optical transceivers. For example, as data centers upgrade from 10G to 40G or from 25G to 100G, breakout MPO/MTP fiber jumper can be used to connect a 40G or 100G port to multiple 10G or 25G ports.

Fan-out MPO/MTP Fiber Patch Cord

Fan-out MPO/MTP fiber patch cord also known as ribbon MPO/MTP fiber patch cord, which use MTP/MPO multi-fiber type connectors and ribbon-type fiber optic cables. These fan-outs are available in 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 fibers, with the option of 0.9mm jacket diameters. They are ideal for making connections within rack-mounted or wall-mounted fiber enclosures that utilize single fiber connectors.

Conclusion

In summary, Trunk MPO/MTP fiber patch cord is used for high-density connections and backbone cabling, breakout MPO/MTP fiber patch cord is used to connect high-speed to lower-speed transceivers, and Fan-out MPO/MTP fiber patch cord is used for transitioning from high-density connections to individual fibers or duplex connectors in high-density fiber optic applications.

Each component of MPO/MTP fiber patch cord has excellent optical and mechanical properties and relatively low insertion loss in high-speed network environments. If you need any support, please feel free to contact us at email: sales@unitekfiber.com
