FAQ

Can I mix Single Mode and Multimode fiber in the same link?

Absolutely not. Because the core sizes are different (9 um vs 50 um), the light will not couple correctly. You will experience a loss of at least 18dB to 20dB, which will immediately crash the link. You must use a media converter or a switch.

Why is Single Mode cable cheaper than Multimode?

Single Mode cable is produced in much higher volumes for the global telecom industry, leading to better economies of scale. However, remember that the transceivers for Single Mode are more expensive due to the precision lasers required.

Is OM5 better than OM4?

Only if you are using SWDM4 transceivers. For standard SR4 or SR10 applications, OM5 performs almost identically to OM4. At Unitekfiber, we recommend OM4 for most standard data center builds to save on infrastructure costs.

What does OS2 stand for?

OS2 stands for Optical Single-mode Step-index. It is the standard for low-water-peak fiber, optimized for the C-band and L-band wavelengths used in long-distance communication.
